Blob Top Cylinders...

Two early amber green 10oz cylinder bottles from Leigh & Co featuring the Globe trademark, these carry no makers name and date to the late 1800's, these turn up in many shades and no 6oz versions are known.

Crown Seal Minerals...

variations of the 6oz crown sealed minerals in amber both embossed Groves & Whitnall, these are also found in aqua glass as shown in the bottom picture, the aqua variations seem to be a later bottle, and in rarer cases embossed with the Leigh & Co Salford brand name as shown in the middle picture, these are one of my favourite bottles from the company and the earlier amber examples always seem to have lovely seed air bubbles in the glass.

Bullet Stopper Minerals....

A 10oz & 6oz version of the amber bullet stopper bottle from Leigh & Co, these rarely carry a makers name but the one on the right is embossed to the base "Barron, Makers, Mexboro" No examples exist embossed with the Groves & Whitnall name, these date from around 1880.

Bullet Stopper Minerals....

A trio of 10oz bullet stopper bottles from Leigh & Co showing the more desirable and rarer lime green glass, these do not show up very often with the amber variations being more common.

Dumpy Mini Seltzers....

Two variations of the dumpy seltzer bottles, on the left is an earlier blob top Leigh & Co featuring the Globe TM, and on the right is a later Groves & Whitnall with a crown seal, these appear in a few shades of amber through to pale green.

Torpedo Minerals (Hamilton's)....


The torpedo bottle also referred to as a Hamilton is available embossed both Groves & Whitnall & Leigh & Co and is probably one of the most collected bottles from this company, they are found in many shades of amber through to green, two 6oz examples are shown in the top picture but there is a very rare 10oz variation in the bottom picture, these date from the late 1800's.

Aqua Groves & Whitnall Codd Bottles....

Aqua codds from Groves & Whitnall are quite uncommon as they mainly opted for the amber glass variations, shown are a few examples of codd bottles, the top picture shows a 10oz & 6oz frontal embossed with the Globe trade mark, the 6oz being the more scarce to find, these were made by Redfern of Barnsley,

The bottom picture shows the Groves & Whitnall arrow in hand trademark Codd bottle with the town name of Hulme Manchester and also features a reinforcing ring to the lip, this variation is also found in deep amber in rare cases and demand a high price.

Altringham Groves & Whitnall Codd Bottle....

Here is a picture of a very rare aqua Codd bottle from Groves & Whitnall showing no trademark and embossed with the town name of Altringham, These have only ever been found in 10oz size.

Green Marble Leigh & Co Codd Bottle....

The coloured marble variation of the Leigh & Co Globe Codd bottle are rarely found, the one in this photo features a deep emerald green marble and is the only example I have seen with this colour, I have yet to see a colour marble variation of a Groves & Whitnall Codd.

Brown Marble Leigh & Co Codd Bottle....

The coloured marble variation of the Leigh & Co Globe Codd bottle are rarely found, the one in this photo features a dark brown marble and is one of only a few examples I have seen with this colour, I have yet to see a colour marble variation of a Groves & Whitnall Codd.

Amber Marble Leigh & Co Codd Bottle....

The coloured marble variation of the Leigh & Co Globe Codd bottle are rarely found, the one in this photo features a light amber marble and is one of the more commonly found examples from this company, I have yet to see a colour marble variation of a Groves & Whitnall Codd.

No Maker Name Leigh & Co Codd Bottles....

These 3 Codd bottles are weird ones that carry no makers name to the rear, they seem to be in a wide array of shades from golden amber to lime green with several different mould variations, mainly found embossed Leigh & Co but some Groves & Whitnall variation do exist but seem to be more scarce.

Frontal Embossed Groves Whitnall Codd Bottles....

The frontal embossed Groves & Whitnall Codd bottles are the more desirable, shown in the top picture are two 10oz examples and show the fantastic colour range available from deep red amber to light golden amber.

In the bottom picture are two 6oz examples, no coloured marble or other variations are known of this type of Codd bottle.

Riley Patent Groves Whitnall Bottles....

The 10oz Riley internal thread patent mineral bottle from Groves & Whitnall are one of the most common bottles found from the company, there are many variations in embossing and colour and a few examples are shown here, the two unusual ones here are the apple green coloured one and the aqua one in the centre of the bottom picture that caries both the Globe & arrow in hand trade mark on one bottle, there are also much rarer 6oz & 20oz variations of the amber bottles known, There are no Leigh & Co variations of this type of bottle known.

Leigh & Co Round Bottom Cylinder....

The 10oz amber round bottomed mineral bottle is embossed Leigh & Co Salford with the Globe trade mark embossed to the other side, this is one of the harder bottles to obtain and is not known in 6oz form or embossed Groves & Whitnall, dates to around 1880.

Side Embossed Groves Whitnall Codd Bottles....

The side embossed standard Codd bottle from Groves & Whitnall Codd bottle are the most common, these have the company name embossed down 2 sides and the Globe trade mark embossed to the rear, maker is normally Redfern Bros Barnsley but some rarer makers names are known, these are widely available in both 10oz & 6oz sizes.

Side Embossed Leigh & Co Codd Bottles....

The side embossed standard Codd bottle from Leigh & Co are the most common, these have the company name embossed down 2 sides and the Globe trade mark embossed to the rear, maker is normally Redfern Bros Barnsley but some rarer makers names are known, these are widely available in both 10oz & 6oz sizes, there is a vast range of shades found, there are also variations with reinforcing rings to the lip as shown in the bottom picture in the middle.

Groves Whitnall Spirit Flasks...

The Groves & Whitnall spirit flasks are available in several sizes and variations embossed Manchester & Hulme, although not found in large amounts these are a nice variation of bottle, No Leigh & Co flasks of this type are known.

1 Pint Beer & Mineral Bottles...

The large 1 pint beer/mineral bottles are found in several colours including aqua, amber, light green & dark green from both Leigh & Co and Groves & Whitnall carrying both the Globe and arrow in hand trade marks, there are also several enclosure variation ranging from cork to internal thread and far to many to show them all here, the amber one is one of the rarer more desirable variations, These date from 1900 - 1930

Leigh & Co 1/2 Pint Mineral Bottle...

The blob top half pint Leigh & Co mineral water bottle dates from around 1880 and is one of the harder bottles to obtain, only found in amber they do appear in several shades.

1/2 Pint Internal Screw Mineral Bottle...

The half pint internal screw mineral bottles are available from both Leigh & Co and Groves & Whitnall, there are a few variations and colours available in green and aqua.

1/2 Pint Green Chisel Lip Mineral Bottle...

These half pint chisel lip & crown seal minerals are quite common with the later not really being collected at the present time and dating to approx the 1930's, the chisel lip mineral is earlier dating to around 1900 - 1910.

1/2 Pint Green Long Neck Beer...

The half pint long neck beer is one of the nicer beer bottles used by Leigh & Co and date to around 1900, using a corked enclosure they are only found in this green colour and there are no variations in embossing or design.

1 Pint Amber Machine Made Mineral...

The 1 pint crown seal mineral in this olive amber colour are a very late machine made bottle with minimal embossing around the base "Groves & Whitnall, Salford" being machine made there are more or less no variations on this bottle.

Connors Patent Amber Codd Bottle...

The 10oz Connors Patent Codd bottle show here is one of the rarest bottles from Leigh & Co, embossed "Connors Patent Stoppers" to the rear along with the makers name Redfearn Brothers Barnsley, and Leigh & Co to the front with no globe trade mark, only found in amber no recorded 6oz variations are known.

Sykes Mcvay Patent Amber Mineral Bottle...

Sykes McVay Patent mineral bottles from Leigh & Co is another very rare and valuable bottle, found in both 10oz and 6oz variations this bottle is distinctive by its integral thread type lip, dimples to the base and marble in the bottom of the bottle, these carry both the Globe trade mark and Leigh & Co brand name.

Codd's Premier Patent Amber Bottle...

The Premier patent bottles from Leigh & Co are possibly the rarest and most sought after bottle from the company, these have only ever been found in small numbers hinting that that they were only used by Leigh for a very short period possibly due to cost or reliability of the patent, found in 10oz and 6oz form embossed "Codds Patent, Premier, Sole Maker, Codd & Ryland's, Barnsley"

Sykes Mcvay Patent Amber Cylinder...

The Sykes Mcvay cylinder dates to the late 1800's and is the rarer variation of cylinder type bottles used by the company, these are only found embossed Leigh & Co and have Sykes Mcvay Patent embossed around the base of the bottle.

Groves Whitnall Arrow In Hand Codd Bottle...

The Arrow In Hand trade mark codd bottle is one of the nicest colour Codd bottles from Groves & Whitnall, these are only found in 10oz form and feature a reinforcing ring around the lip of the bottle, these are quite a rarity and hard to obtain.

Important Note:
The bottle shown in the bottom photo is a fake of the arrow in hand Codd bottle, these were exposed in 2009 after one was passed off as genuine, this bottle is now in the safe hands of BBR at Elsecar out of circulation in their "Fakes" cabinet, these were made by means of flow jetting a common amber Globe codd adding the new embossing, the colour and embossing are totally wrong compared to the top picture, genuine bottles are only found in the red amber shown at the top.

Groves Whitnall Amber Skittle Bottle...

The Groves & Whitnall amber skittle is indeed a rare bottle, not many have been found and very rarely appear on the open market, dating to around 1890 they are not found carrying the Leigh name and only found in 6oz form using a cork enclosure.

J Cronshaw Manchester Codd Bottles...

These 2 Codd Patent bottles are embossed J Cronshaw, Manchester, Cronshaw's artisan mineral water works were acquired by Groves & Whitnall in 1899 and they continued to manufacture under this name for a few years with Mr Cronshaw becoming a director of Groves & Whitnall, these bottles are only found in aqua in both 10oz and 6oz sizes, there are also torpedo bottles found from this company.

Groves Whitnall Salford Globe Stone Ginger Beer...

The Globe trade mark stone ginger beer is one of the first to use the Groves Whitnall name, its basically an adaption of the Leigh & Co variation made sometime after Leigh were absorbed into the bigger company in 1899, using a cork enclosure these were only used for a relatively short period these don't turn up as often as the Leigh examples.

Groves Whitnall Manchester Stone Ginger Beer...

The arrow in hand trade mark stoneware ginger beer bottle by Groves & Whitnall stating the city of Manchester rather than Salford was the bottle used before they became fully integrated with Leigh & Co, these are quite a rarity compared to other stoneware bottles from the company, these also used a cork enclosure, there is also a near identical example using the J Cronshaw name.

Groves Whitnall Salford Stone Ginger Beer (Corked)...

The non pictorial Groves & Whitnall stone ginger beer was the most widely used and mass produced of this type of stoneware bottle from the company and  are found in large numbers using both cork and internal screw stoppers as shown below.

Groves Whitnall Salford Ginger Beer (Internal Screw)...

The non pictorial Groves & Whitnall stone ginger beer was the most widely used and mass produced of this type of stoneware bottle from the company and  are found in large numbers using both internal screw and  Cork stoppers as shown above, the internal screw variation also carried the words "Please Replace Stopper"

Groves Whitnall Salford Honey Glaze Ginger Beer...

This golden honey glaze variation of the Groves & Whitnall stone ginger beer is a very rare example and I have only ever seen a few examples myself, it used the cork enclosure.

Leigh & Co Salford Globe Stone Ginger Beer...

The Globe trade mark stone ginger beer from Leigh & Co is one of the most common stoneware bottles to carry the Leigh name, after Leigh was absorbed into the bigger company of Groves & Whitnall variation appeared carrying the Groves & Whitnall name.

Leigh & Co White Incised Stone Ginger Beer...

This is an early incised stone ginger beer bottle from Leigh & Co dating to around 1880, before the introduction of printing on stoneware bottles the company name was impressed into the clay before firing the glaze.
