Price Guide: Groves Bottles

I receive quite a few emails asking for valuations on bottles from Groves & Whitnall, as its impossible to give a valuation I have compiled an approximate price guide of bottles, these valuations are merely based on prices achieved in the past and should not be taken as an exact value, prices vary on many factors such as demand, popularity, glass color, condition, damage, embossing etc. I have sometimes seen bottles that would normally only make £10 make double their value on eBay so its impossible to be exact, I cannot give valuations on other company items such as Matchstrikers etc as its very rare these come up for sale so its a simple case of what somebody would be willing to pay. I hope you find this list in some way helpful and I regret I cannot give valuations by email. Where possible I have added a link to a photo of the bottle that can be viewed in a new tab/window by clicking the link at the end of each description.

Note: NO bottles are being offered for sale on this page or website.

Other Bottle Types......

Groves & Whitnall Torpedo: Named due to its pointed base, these are found in small size only and can vary in color from a golden amber through to olive green, featuring the globe trade mark embossed on one side with "Groves & Whitnall Salford" on the other, there are a few variations on the Globe trade mark embossing orientation and design found, these have a huge range in value due to condition, embossing and color, in some cases examples have sold for £100+ due to these factors but the normal value these achieve is lower.

Rarity: C / Price: £20 - £30  Photo

Groves & Whitnall Quart Barrel: The amber Groves & Whitnall Quart barrel is very desirable with collectors and are not often seen for sale, they are also found in aqua glass, embossed "Groves & Whitnall Salford" with the Globe trade mark and a ribbed top and bottom and fitted with an internal screw closure.

Groves & Whitnall Small Crown Seal: There are several variations of the amber crown sealed mineral in amber embossed Groves & Whitnall, full frontal embossed and the earlier 2 side embossed with a large Globe trade mark to the rear, these are also found in frontal embossed aqua glass with the aqua variation seeming to be a later bottle.

Groves & Whitnall Riley Patent Bottles: One of the most common bottles found from this company, produced in large numbers in the standard large size they range from aqua through amber into in unusual cases almost light green, the embossing variations of these are many but nearly all work around the same design, there is also a more uncommon variation that has less embossing but features a small Globe & arrow in hand trade mark on the same bottle (Pic 2), a super sized 20oz amber variation is known as in a smaller amber 6oz size but these are very rarely seen. Prices given are for the standard variation in all colors. I have included photos of 6 of the standard variations for reference.

Groves & Whitnall Dumpy Seltzer: I have only ever seen one seltzer embossed with the Groves & Whitnall name and that is this crown seal amber variation, it bares no trade mark of any kind and is quite plain in appearance but also quite uncommon.

Groves & Whitnall Small Green Mineral: These come in a couple of variations starting with the Chisel lipped variation featuring the Globe trade mark (left in photo) dating to around 1915 and the much later machine made crown seal variation featuring the arrow trade mark dating to 1950's - 1960's (right in photo) with the later only being worth a couple of pounds.
